Notes for Virginia Marie Sweeney
MOTHER

Would you have loved me
if I had been better
if I had tried harder to please

Would you have hated me so
if I had said yes
if I had said no

Would you have hurt me
and twisted my soul
if I had done what I was told

Would you have loved me
just for a while
if I had not been your child

Notes for Stanley Joseph (Spouse 1)
BATAAN

A bayonet away from death
fear is his only friend
but he believes in God and country
and that soon the war will end

But he walks a thousand miles
and the days turn into years
and he starts to doubt his country
and he wonders if God can hear

“I am a battling bastard” he yells
“I fight for freedom for you”
but his voice is lost in the silence
as his country abandons their youth

After the shackles are broken
after the wounds have healed
freedom doesn’t seem so free
and reality seems so unreal

Now the war is fought inside his mind
and the little girl’s face is bleak
as she cries to God and country
“How could you take my daddy from me”

FLASHBACK

he sat there in a mindless haze
long fingernails, unshaven face
he did not know her
....or did not care
that was not her daddy sitting there

a little girl should not know some things
of long fought wars and flashback scenes
of broken fences, broken dreams

the years have passed and life goes on
and broken fences mended
but it will never be long enough
for a little girl who saw too much

WHEN THE ANGELS CRIED

Where were you
when the angels cried
when the earth stood still
when my father died

Where were you
when he waited for death
when he smiled his last
when the end was met

Where were you
when his soul slipped away
when I lost him forever
at the end of the day.

--- Virginia J Krolikoski
